  • 1 teaspoon urad dal
  • 1 teaspoon chana dal
  • 5-6 cashewnuts split in half
  • 12-15 curry leaves
  • ½ teaspoon hing
  • 2/4 cup sambar onions whole or halved
  • 1 green capsicum cut into ½ inch cubes
  • 2 tomatoes cut into1 inch cubes
  • ¼ cup grated dessicated coconut
  • ¼ cup bisibele bath powder i used MTR bisibele bath powder
  • ¼ cup tamarind extract not super thick (see note 1)
  • 1 tablespoon jaggery
  • ½ tsp chilli powder
  • 1 ¼ teaspoon salt adjust to taste
  • ½ cup green peas
  • 3 cups water
  • 3 tablespoons chopped coriander

Instructions

  • Add rice, dal, carrots, beans, salt, turmeric, oil and water to a pressure cooker. Cook on high for 1 whistle, then reduce the flame and cook for 2 more whistles. Let the pressure release naturally.
  • Heat ghee in a large kadhai or pot and add mustard and jeera. As they start to crackle, add urad dal, chana dal, cashews and roast till they are a light golden brown. Add curry leaves and hing.
  • Add sambar onions and capsicum and saute for two minutes. Add tomatoes, dessicated coconut, bisibele bath powder, tamarind extract, jaggery, chilli powder, salt, green peas and 2 cups of water. Boil this for 3-4 minutes.
  • Add the cooked rice, dal and veggies along with another cup or more of water (adjust as per the consistency you prefer) and simmer for 3-4 minutes. Top with fresh coriander.
  • This can be served immediately but I prefer to serve it after a couple of hours. The taste just gets better as it sits!
