The first thing that comes to mind when someone says waffles is butter, cream, maple syrup, and something really sweet. But we’re the kind of family that wants variety, so here’s a savoury waffle recipe that’s been a big hit.

Made using golden sweet corn, cheese and veggies, this is the perfect kid-friendly recipe that will be gobbled down by the pickiest of the eaters. Since I have used ground and whole corn, the flavour of corn is really prominent in every bite. Plus it lends a lovely texture to the waffles. Finely chopped spring onions and capsicum deliver crunch, while the cheese is the hero of this recipe that turns these savoury waffles into total flavour bombs!

  • You can customise the veggies some other veggies to try include cabbage, onions, grated carrots, spinach, grated  zucchinis and bell peppers to make this dish even more nutrient dense.

Ingredients You’ll need to make Savoury Corn and Cheese Waffles

Savoury waffles are generally made of flour, eggs, and milk like their sweet counterparts, but the similarities end here. Unlike sweet waffles, savoury waffles generally include some sort of veggies for flavour and crunch.

Picture of all the ingredients for corn cheese waffles text to identify them
  • Corn: Frozen corn – both coarsely ground and whole kernels
  • Spring onions: Finely chopped spring onion greens for freshness and flavour. Sub with coriander in a pinch.
  • Capsicum: Finely chopped for lots of texture and a slight heat in every bite.
  • Cheese: A combination of cheddar and mozzarella is my favourite but processed cheese also works really well
  • Italian seasoning: For a herby flavour
  • Salt: For flavour and seasoning.
  • Sugar: An expected ingredient, but it really helps enhance the corn-iness of the waffles
  • Flour: Both whole wheat and all purpose flour. You can play around with the proportions but I went halfsies
  • Baking powder: Just a pinch helps make the batter fluffy and the waffles, airy and crispy.
  • Egg: 1 whole egg to bind the mixture together
  • Milk: Helps thin out the batter and adds a creaminess to the whole dish.

What to put on savoury waffles?

Most common ideas for savoury waffle toppings include sour cream, bacon, avocados, tomatoes, and green sauce. You can even add caramelised onions, sauteed mushrooms, grated cheddar cheese, and cream cheese.

My favourite thing about these healthy waffles is that with the right kind of toppings, these could pass off as a wholesome meal. Believe me when I tell you that just one bite of these easy savoury waffles will have you craving them every Sunday morning. My best tip would be to make extras, because these disappear really fast!

whoa, pretty creative, the only savory waffles I’ve had with a chicken breast thrown on top, but baked in is much more creative, so thank you!
